A number of schoolboys, living in the Northumberland Park area of North
London, played for the Hotspur Cricket Club. In September 1882 they decided
to form the Hotspur Football Club, named after Harry Hotspur the 15th
century teenage son of the Earl of Northumberland who owned lands in North
London which later became known as Northumberland Park.
After starting with a dyed dark blue kit they changed to Blackburn Rovers
colours in admiration of the side after watching it win its second
successive FA Cup Final in 1885. It was at this time that the Club changed
its name to Tottehnham Hotspur to prevent confusion with another club called
London Hotspur.
Despite the subsequent kit of red shirts and navy blue shorts followed by chocolate and gold stripes, Spurs decided to change to Preston North End's colours of
white and navy blue in 1898 in recognition of the Invincibles feat of
achieving the League and FA Cup double. Spurs hoped it would bring them luck
to do the same - which they successfully accomplished in 1961 and 1962.
Research was carried out in conjunction with the Club.
