The origin of the Club was due to the creation of a school side called Blakenhall St Luke's in 1877 which then joined with a local cricket club which also played football, named Blakenhall Wanderers FC to form Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1879.

The Club's first kit in the late 1870's was believed to have been blue and white striped shirts which then changed to faded red (sometimes described as pink) and white stripes due to West Bromwich Albion having adopted the same colours. In 1891 gold and black was first used, taken from the colours of the city of Wolverhampton's coat of arms which in turn represented the motto "Out of darkness cometh light".

These distinctive colours were worn in a variety of designs before the use of darker old gold shirts from the early 1930's until 1954 when a return to gold shirts became associated with Wolves' most successful period of their history. The only change to the use of these colours was the introduction of white shorts in the 1920's whilst different plain and hooped socks using the gold and black theme have been used throughout the Club's history.

Research was carried out in conjunction with the Club.
